這些特性主要歸因于氟原子的獨特性質。‌氟是電負性最高的元素,‌碳氟鍵的鍵能很高,‌使得氟表面活性劑具有良好的化學穩定性和熱穩定性。‌同時,‌氟碳鏈的極性比碳氫鏈小,‌使得氟碳鏈的疏水作用遠比碳氫鏈強,‌并具備疏油性,‌從而高效降低表面張力。‌此外,‌氟表面活性劑在水溶液中的溶解度取決于其極性基團和碳氟基的結構,‌其溶解度隨著鏈長的增加而降低,‌這也影響了其表面活性的表現‌。‌
